Marshmallow Challenge

Fifth Grade students stepped up to the Marshmallow Challenge!
I heard, "We can just try." "I'm glad we had fun!"

Reflections: Your still a winner cause you tried! I learned to work together.

Math Thoughts: Trying to balance a marshmallow on time. What angle to use. I wonder what the weight of the spaghetti is? Should we have cut in 1/5, or 1/6's?
You don't have to touch
"I'm glad we had fun!"

It's this tall?

I think this is it!

You can link to the Marshmallow Challenge

"Don't worry how tall it is."

I wonder how it works?
I think it goes this way.        PDF Format

Students shared something we could do better next time:

Work better and stay on task and contribute and use quiet voices.
We can work together which means not 1 or 2 should not be working, all the people should work together.

Students are learning about their families: exploring family experiences through writing and reading.
In class, students practiced interviewing a partner.
Now, they are interviewing a family member. They have questions like . . .
  • Can you describe your father or mother as you remember looking at them when you were small?
  • Who was the best cook in your family?
  • Any relatives remembered? Grandparents or Aunts and Uncles?
  • Did your family ever move?
Then, they will acquire "My Interview Book" to interview an adult they know.

Super Sizes

Students read informational text, Super Size in the Scholastic News. They will determine the author's main points in the article, and then identify reasons or pieces of evidence that support each point.

Then watched, Supersize Me in 7 mins: How too much of McDonald's will make you feel! Selected scenes from the documentary "Supersize Me" directed by Morgan Spurlock, focusing on what too much McD's does to your body and how it makes one feel.

What point is the cartoonist trying to make?

Character Writing

Students are creating a character to use in their writing. The idea developed after watching singer Taylor Swift, a live classroom webcast. She shared how she wrote stories about her friends. She expressed, "When I was 12 or 13, my family spent the summer like at the shore. And I missed my friends back home so much. That, I would spend all my days locked in the den at ah computer just writing a novel. I did add all my friends from school in my novel so I didn’t miss them as much. It ended up being like 400 pages long.”
My students were excited about using their friends in a story.
She also talked about the Genre she read as a kid.  She shared when reading adventures, “It’s fun to escape from where you are in your life and jump into someone else’s.”

They will create and customize their character using the
